Tree rings are fomed each growing season. Just under the bark of the tree you will find what is known as the cambium. This is the living part of the tree which on it's inner side has what is known as the xylem (uptakes water and nutrients from the root system), and the phloem (responsible for transporting the food made in the leaves back in to the tree). This cambium layer is responsible for the width growth of the tree. As the cambium divides and multiplies it's cells, the width of the tree increases. At the end of the growing season in deciduous trees (leaf shedders), the cambium slows it's services down, this in turn means all the nutrients are transported along a narrow passage (due to cell reproduction slowing down). This will leave a narrow stain giving us a ring. The following spring when the cambium re-juvinates the cells multiply rapidly and the wood appears less stained as the expansion of new wood happens quicker. Dependant on the species of tree, sunlight and rainfall and the growing conditions, the width of the rings will be determined.
