Disconnect the vacuum advance hose from the distributor and plug it. Make a white or yellow mark on the harmonic balancer at the 0 degree mark, and a mental note of the numbers on the timing tab. Connect a timing light to the #1 ignition wire and start the engine. Aim the timing light at the timing tab and observe where the white or yellow mark aligns on the timing tab. Loosen the distributor hold-down clamp and rotate the distributor to achieve the desired timing. Most '76 model 350's had very low compression from the factory, and benefit greatly from increased advance. The factory settings were probably around 6 or 8 BTDC but they can be set up to 16 BTDC depending on fuel quality. It would be unwise to advance the timing to a point that caused pinging under part-throttle, as this could easily result in broken pistons. Reconnect the vacuum hose when finished.
