By using information about the character that the author has provided in the footnotes.
One way to analyze a story character is to identify a challenge with which the authors have faced the characters and show how each character has reacted to it.
That sitcom MASH shows an example where they have taken each character and faced them with the same challenge, and in doing so, they have communicated alternate messages that are much larger than the usual themes of comedy. That larger theme says a lot about each character, government, citizens, and questions the entire idea of war. Characters like Margret and Frank often call themselves ethical under the idea that they are doing their best to following the rules of the organization. These characters constantly argue that they are doing their best to serve their country. However, Hawkeye and BJ are the ones who challenge the status quo and are often seen as more ethical. Rather than simply following the routine, Hawkeye is often challenged with the ideas of "What would you do?"
By finding an example of the identified theme, perhaps a Korean citizen asking the hospital for help to deliver her child, I could develop some images about each character through the comparison of their reaction in the story. Frank would most likely argue that it is not ethical to waste government dollars because the resources are first needed for the GI's and she should not have had the child in the first place. Hawkeye would argue, wait a minute! This isn't just some image that Frank has stereotyped. There is a living, breathing child here that could be harmed, if he does not act. Since he is between inbound rounds and he is just standing idle, it might be best to ignore some of these Army rules to stay on campus and help someone who has nothing to do with this war. In the beginning of the story Hawkeye is challenged as unethical by Margaret and Frank for their failure to practice code, or not following authority, but who is seen as more ethical in the end?
By discussing the themes that challenge each character, it makes it easy to compare the characters without sounding like you are making a list. The reactions to the same challenge can illustrate a lot about the character because when you are discussing the larger points that are illustrated but not necessarily discussed within the story.
You can look at their dialogue, reactions to things, and their inner thinking ( if there is any!) You can also find character traits by looking at the way they do things like do they shy away, or go right to it? Also, mabye a little by what other characters say about them. There is really alot of ways to do this, and these are only some!
Pay attention to how the character speaks and acts -- educated people use bigger words and act more "refined" than uneducated people. You can also look at what they're wearing or what they own in the story to see whether they have money or not. You can tell if they're basically good or bad by what they do.
Inferences are guesses you make based on available data. Anything you learn about the story helps you to understand it better, so guessing why the characters are doing what they're doing helps you to understand their actions.
You make inferences based on what the character does, says, thinks, and feels. The author provides this information - either directly or indirectly - and you can make guesses about the character's personality and what they might be going to do next.

Character evaluation involves assessing a character's personality, motivations, actions, and development within a story. It helps readers or viewers better understand and analyze the role and significance of the character in the narrative. Evaluating a character can provide insights into themes, conflicts, and the overall message of the story.
This is referred to as character analysis, where readers analyze a character's traits, motivations, and actions to understand their role in the story and the impact they have on the plot and other characters. By interpreting a character based on their actions, readers can uncover deeper meanings and themes within the story.
One effective question to ask when analyzing character motivation is: "What are the character's goals and desires, and how do they drive their actions and decisions throughout the story?"
It makes a connection between a trait and the evidence in the story.
When analyzing a character's actions, it is important to consider their motives, the impact of their actions on themselves and others, and how their actions contribute to the overall plot or themes of the story. Look for patterns or changes in behavior that reveal more about the character's development and complexity.
Analysis means looking at all the parts to understand how something works. For a character, you'll want to look at the physical descriptions, their goals and dreams, their emotions, their personality -- anything you can learn about that character.
