If a person has wished you a happy birthday, a polite response is, "Thank you. I appreciate the good wishes." Or, "Thank you. It was kind of you to remember."

"Many happy returns." may also be a polite response, especially if you like to share your birthday.

There is no set way to reply to a birthday greeting; different situations have different ways in which it is appropriate to respond.

For example, a child receiving a birthday card from a school friend may respond with a simple 'thank you' (especially if they have received a gift) - it could be perceived as unusual to respond formally or in writing in this instance.

In other situations, it may be suitable to respond more formally, particularly if the greeting was sent by somebody, not given in person. For example, a letter or card thanking the person for the greeting, or a phone call of the same nature, would be an appropriate way to respond.

The exact way in which a person will respond to a birthday greeting will depend on circumstances such as the person who gave the greeting, the nature of the greeting, and the type of relationship those two people have. Generally, the words 'thank you', or something along those lines, will be included in a response of this kind.
