For those who use metric units:

To figure out your BMI, take your weight (in kilograms) and divide it by your height (in meters). Now take that number and divide it by your height again. Now you have your BMI!

In a formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height2 (m)

For those who use imperial units:

To figure out your BMI, take your weight (in pounds) and divide it by your height (in inches). Now take that number and divide it by your height again. Once you have that answer, multiply that by 705, and you have your BMI!

In a formula: BMI = 705 * weight (lb) / height2 (in)

To calculate your BMI:Metric Units (Centimeters (cm) and Kilograms (kg)) - You square your height (times it by itself) then divide your weight by the answer from the previous part.

Imperial Units (Inches (in) and Pounds (lb)) You square your height (as above) then times your weight by 703 and then divide this answer by your squared height

If you don't want to work it all out yourself there are many BMI Calculators online and certain bathroom scales will do it too.

If Your BMI is under 18.5 then you are underweight.

If your BMI is from 18.5 to 25 you are average weight.

If your BMI is from 25.1 to 30 you are overweight.

If Your BMI is 30.1+ then you are obese.

HOWEVER ... these numbers are very generic, because they don't take into account a number of other health-related factors such as muscle mass, fat distribution, waist-to-hip ratio, and so on. Many health professionals caution that BMI numbers are crude guides at best, and anyone who has health concerns should consult with their doctor before making lifestyle changes based solely on BMI.

The mathematical formula to calculate your BMI, is based on the relation of your weight according to your height - weight in kilograms is divided by the squared value of height in meters.

Example: if you weigh 68 kg and are 1m and 78 cm tall:

BMI = (68 / 1.78 x 1.78) = (68 / 3.17) = 21.45
