The Hospital or Surgical team will give you the necessary details about the operation on pre assessment. In general, you need to have a bowel preparation to clean your bowels a day before surgery, the site of the stoma for colostomy will be marked and you need to starve for about 5 hours before surgery. Bowel prep can cause dehydration so elderly patients and Diabetics may need an intravenous drip while fasting. More recently some Surgeons do not use bowel prep so follow the instructions given by the Hospital

Why is a colostomy placed on the left side of the body?

A colostomy is on the left side because the patient has had the last part of their large intestine removed from the sigmoid colon top the anus. That is the last functioning part of their large intestine, so they place the stoma and the colostomy bag in that location, on the left side. If they have a ileostomy, then the bag is on the right side because they have had their entire large intestine removed and the bag collects the fecal matter from the end of the small intestine.

What happens when you swallow a cherry pit and you have a colostomy?

The cherry pit will pass through your intestines faster than if you didn't have a colostomy (just because of the surgical shortening of the bowel with a colostomy). Unless you have bowel disease that would be irritated or exacerbated by the cherry pit (like diverticulosis), it should pass through and into your bag, like all other digestive wastes, without problems. Check with your health care professional to see if you have any compounding factors with the particular condition that necessitated your colostomy to be sure.
