It is very easy, first you need to remove the plastic dash cover around the instrument panel. You need to remove two screws located up in the instrument panel. Remove 4 screws and remove the instrument panel, disconet 3 electric plugs behind the instrument panel. After this you will have the instrument panel in your hand and you can check one by one each bulb. It have 2 differents bulbs.
well i had the same issue it is a sealed unit of which u can have rebuilt or you can run to the scrap yard much cheaper after you pull the front of ur dash off if i remember right there is only one screw on the passenger side where your fuses are and the rest should pop off but be careful i dont remember for sure you may also have to pull the bottom of the dash off there are screws under the dash for that i think 5 and those just pop off then there are only three screws holdin it on just take em out and unplug the harness and put the new one in but i would suggest if you do go to the scrap yard you do a test run on that dash first its a headache if you break a part cause you can never find a matching colour so good luck
Begin by removing the instrument panel cover. The instrument panel cover is held in place with for retaining screws. Take hold of the dashboard lightbulb, push in and turn at the same time. The lightbulb will come out. Reverse the process to install your new dashboard lightbulb.
Look underneath the rear bumper near the license plate. There is a wire that goes to each one, on the end of those wires is the bulb assembly. Press both sides of the plastic base and turn, bulb should come out, then simply plug one back into the base, and put back into the housing and turn until it locks back into place.

you need to remove the inside panel to get to these bulbs
They are located inside the trunk lid, underneath the felt lining. You need to unsnap and pull back the felt lining to access the bulbs for the license plate light.
From inside the trunk,twist the socket counterclockwise to remove the socket...
Change brake light bulbs Just remove the rear license plate. You can change the backup lights and brake light easily.
From the outside of the car.. Just un-screw the two screws and change the bulb.

Changing the license plate bulb on a 2002 Lincoln LS is quite simple. You must first remove the license plate first. Then unscrew the old bulbs and screw in your new ones.

from inside the trunk pop all of the plastic rivots and you can access the bulbs from the inside..
there are 2 license plate bulbs-look up above license plate,see 2 lens covers.remove with Philips screwdriver and pull bulbs out of sockets.i just did it t'nite but the lites still don't work.may be short or broken wire-perhaps where wires go thru liftgate opening...haven't checked yet. look for simple solution...bulbs 1st!
