The flag of the United States of America started out with 13 stars representing the first 13 states of the nation. As new states were admitted to the USA we added a new star to our flag for each. Sometimes several states were admitted in the same year so we added multiple stars to our flag at one time. In total there were 27 official flags of the USA from 13 stars to the current 50 star flag.

The Australian flag did not change after Federation. Because Australia only became a nation with Federation, prior to this time there was no Australian flag. Each of the states, or colonies, had its own flag, but there was no Australian flag. After the Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed on 1 January 1901, the Commonwealth government held a design competition for a new national flag. There were 32,000 entries in the competition, and most featured the Union Jack, the Southern Cross, or native animals. Five almost identical entries were selected to share the 200 pound prize. On 3 September 1901, the new Australian flag flew for the first time from the top of the Exhibition Building in Melbourne. The flag was simplified, and approved by King Edward VII in 1902. Note : Australia did not become a Nation at Federation it became a single British Colony with six States . The Federal Parliament was classed as a ' Colonial Legislature ' and the National flag remained the Union Flag of the UK . The current flag we fly was an ' Ensign ' ( sub flag ) of the British Empire .
The last change in the flag occurred while Eisenhower was President , when Hawaii and Alaska became states . I don't think Eisenhower ordered the change, but he approved it .
