The alt key can get stuck either physically or you might have got the Sticky Keys on. Which will make the alt key being pressed. Go to control panel and then keyboard . You will find sticky keys under one of the tabs. Turn them off. You might also have changed the font from Arial or Times Roman ( Roman Characters ) to other symbolic font. So go ahead and change it.
