The compressor has to be running when you charge the unit , and if it is so low that the compressor will not run you must short the switch to make it run while charging . all autos have the same fittings and if you are using the cans you can buy at the store , you must take into account if you have oil in the system, if the oil is low, you must replace it , it has to be compatible with the compressor. you have two fittings , make sure it is the low pressure or suction side to insert the R134 . usually the fittings will not fit the high side . If the air has been with out a charge for sometime you must check for leaks because it may be leaking so bad it will only go in and come back out real quick. This requires that you take it to a dealer or a shop so they can check it out completely . Only the units that are somewhat low should be charged as it may be contaminated inside and will cause compressor failure . Leaks can occur over a 7 to ten year period abnd those leaks are acceptable . In any case bear in mind this is a high pressure system and blindness or physical injury can occur while doing the re-charging. R 12 is not used any more and in cases where it used you must have a license or be certified to work with that refrigerant. A hose adapter is needed to use the cans .
