Assuming you have a V6 w/ 3100 across the top (intake manifold). The fluid is checked throuh a plug (11mm) on the right (passenger) side. Find the drain plug for the engine oil. Locate the transmission pan. As you're laying under the front of the passenger side it's a small plug about three inches up from the transmission pan. There are two theories about how to check the fluid level, one is engine off (I have never heard of checking an auto trans with it off), so I checked mine hot with the engine running. Hope this helps. By the way, with the research I've done....sell it!

The 1998 Chevy Malibu does not have a transmission dipstick. Instead there is a check plug located on the transaxle, near the pan, adjacent to the engine oil drain plug. Note: the vehicle must be kept level when checking the transmission fluid level. Place an oil container under the check plug and remove it. Observe the fluid as it drips into the pan, indicating correct fluid level. The fluid level should be at the bottom of the check hole. Double check to make sure the car is level. If no fluid drips from the check hole, some fluid should be added via the red cap. But add only a little at a time until the fluid is at the bottom of the check hole.

To check the transmission fluid for a 2005 Malibu 3.5, the first step is to block the wheels so the car will not move. Start the car and put the car in neutral, then open the hood and locate the transmission dip stick. Pull out the dip stick, wipe off with a paper towel and insert it back into to tube. Take it out again and note where the fluid level is. If it is on add, add one quart at a time of the proper transmission fluid until the dipstick level is at full.
