Simple. If the car is cold, start it and go through all the gears. Starting in P, go to R, N, D, 2, 1 then move back to P. Do this slowly so the trans can engage each gear. Once your back to P, set the e-brake and leave your engine running. Pull the dipstick (its near the battery) and check the level. There are two notchs at the bottom where it says "cold". The fluid level should be between those two notches. To check it hot, drive the car at normal operating temperature for at least 15 minutes and check the dipstick with the engine running. There is another set of notches marked "hot".
