You don't mention what sort of dirt you have in there, but whenever I have to stay in a hotel, I think about all the previous occupants, and I run vinegar water through the whirlpool before I put even one toe in. Just fill the tub as if you were going to use it, add at least 1 cup of vinegar, and run the jets. Room service should be able to provide the vinegar - don't use bleach, which could damage the interior hoses. Vinegar will dissolve soap and kill off most bacteria.

Moyes, tested 43 water samples from whirlpool bathtubs -- both private and public ones -- and found that all 43 had bacterial growth ranging from mild to red-level dangerous. A whopping 95 percent showed the presence of fecal derived bacteria, while 81 percent had fungi and 34 percent contained staphylococcus, which can cause deadly staph infections.

Jetted Tub Effectiveness Tests:

Scientific Biofilm Solutions tested their jetted tub cleaner called Oh Yuk. They tested a 25-year-old name brand hotel that had never treated the jetted tub for biofilm or bacteria. They cut out sections of the jetted tubs plumbing line prior to, and after treating the jetted tub with Oh Yuk. The test results are quite staggering. Test results: The bacteria content in the plumbing lines before treatment contained over 1,400,000 particles of bacteria containing high levels of mold. After the first treatment the bacteria levels dropped to only 95,000 along with removing the mold in the system. This is a 93% removal of bacteria in an old, heavily used jetted tub, after one treatment.

What to look for in a jetted tub cleaner:

The cleaner must actually remove biofilm. Many jetted tub cleaners do not remove biofilm. They claim to remove scale and soap scum, but not biofilm. Scale and soap scum aren't the problem, mold and bacteria in the biofilm are the problem. Check the manufacturer's web site for proof that the cleaner removes biofilm. It must be easy to use such as a liquid, not a paste that needs dissolving; this will slow down the entire process, often ending with undesirable results.

Jetted tub cleaning myths:

Many people think that you can clean a jetted tub by using powdered dishwashing detergent or bleach, however this will not penetrate the biofilm that harbors the dangerous bacteria. This will only add to the protective barrier making it harder for an actual jetted tub cleaner to do its job. There have been multiple studies on chlorine for treating biofilm, all coming to the same conclusion: chlorine cannot penetrate and remove the biofilm. You need a cleaner specifically designed to remove the biofilm.

Treating biofilm in jetted bathtubs must be done with a chemical specifically designed to remove biofilm. Just like with a swimming pool or hot tub, jetted bathtubs can be a safe and enjoyable way to relax, but require proper maintenance. Jetted tubs have plumbing lines containing stagnant water that is filled with harmful bacteria and thrives in the biofilm. By removing the biofilm in the plumbing system, you are also removing the bacteria in the system, making the tub much cleaner and safer to use.

There is usually a hose or drain connection somewhere near the bottom. If it's a hard-sided, then there will be an access panel, probably near where the power and pump are located.

Make sure that it's shut down completely, and the power disconnected. You don't want to burn out the heater or pumps by draining it while it's trying to heat.

If you cannot find the drain fitting, then disconnect the power and either pump or siphon the water out.

Your instruction manual should have information specific for your model.

Iron is one of the toughest stains to remove. It can be removed by applying muriatic acid to it. Muriatic acid is used to clean concrete driveways and such and is found at hardware and home fix-it stores. It is actually a 33% solution of hydrochloric acid; it's pretty dangerous if it gets on the skin or you inhale it. However, used in small quantities, it can remove the iron stains quite readily. Depending on the material you're trying to remove the iron from, muriatic acid may damage the tub or pipe material. I'd try a small test area first by rubbing gently with the acid, or even letting it soak for 15-30 minutes, and then progress from there; do this in a ventilated area.

Add one cup of regular chlorine bleach to the water, then add 1/8 dish detergent. Allow the filling water to agitate the mixture. Start the jets.Leave the jets on for fifteen to twenty minutes, allowing the mixture to circulate through the system and remove hard water deposits, lime scale, and other build up.
