If your piece is something tough like a chain, I would do the following
First of all soak it in a glass of warm water with a little washing up liquid to get the dirt off.
Then try soaking in a solution of water and malt vinegar. Lightly buff with the edge of a scotchbrite pad or similar, to get any resistant deposits off. Then wash and buff with a soft cloth.
Be much more careful if the piece has paste or pearls as you shouldn't get it wet. Try a soft toothbrush perhaps with a tiny bit of metal polishaand take care.
