Best Answer

It is best to train the little hermit crab to use his large claw to remove his own fecal matter but, if you have a feral crab that refuses to cooperate, the Westcoast Hermit Crab Owners and Breeders Association (R) endorses Bounty paper towels...'the quicker picker-upper'. If you have sand in your hermit crab's tank for flooring, you could use a strainer to sift out the poo, then you could put it in a bag and throw it away.

Every 3-6 months you should empty the cage, remove and replace (or sterilize) the substrate. Soak all climbing wood pieces in salt water and bake at 250 until dry. This is a good time to give your crabs a bath and get a head count. Inspect each crab for signs if recent or impending molts and other problems. Take all your extra shells and give them a good rinse so they are fresh and clean.

if your tank has gravel then clean the gravel in a bucket that is filled with water then keep on taking out the water and refilling it until the water comes out clear. when this is done create a strong salt water and wash gravel in this for 20 minutes so it deosn.t stink.

wash out the tank with normal water then clean with a sponge that has salt water clean anything inside the tank the same way.

Okay if you have more than one crab, put all of them in a container that thay cannot escape out of. Fill a container with lukewarm water, pretty high put not too high. Put Hermit Crab Water Conditioner in, along with Hermit Crab Salt. Take on crab at a time and set them in the water on their backs. If they do not come out right away move them around some. Once they come out set them up normally. Swish them around some to get rid of debris and other things. Do not leave them in there for more than 50 seconds, THEY WILL DROWN! Once done place then back in the container you orignally put them in that they would not escape from. Do the same with every crab.

get a bucket of boiling water. put hermit crabs in another container. empty tank,(you can boil the sand to reuse it) take out toys(make sure you dont put the plastic toys in the boiling water) put toys and dishes in bucket.

Wait till water is cool or room temp. take toys and dishes out put them some where to dry. dump rest of water in tank and rinse out. MAKE SURE WATER IS DISTILLED OR SPRING. then put the substrate in, and put toys and dishes back in with your hermies. :) :P

How long should Hermet crabs be cleaned?

Hermit crabs should stay in a tub of lukewarm water for around 2-3 minutes. You shouldn't bathe them any longer than 3 or 4 minutes. Depending on the type of hermit crab, there is a possibility that the hermit crab could drown, so watching the hermit crab moving is a good thing. Bathe your hermit crab once a week. If your hermit crab is not used to taking baths, start giving him/her baths once a month and when your crabs are used this give him/her baths once a week. Clean your crab for at least 15 minutes or wait until your crab climbs out of his bathtub.

Will hermit crabs eat a molting crab?

Yes, so if a hermit crab is molting put some card board in between the hermit crab and the others because the others might dig it up and eat it alive. Make SURE both sides of hermit crabs have food and water. Even though the hermit crab might not dig up that, day it might while you are away, and it will need food and water as soon as it comes up.

Is your hermit crab a boy or a girl?

You can tell by looking underneath the third row of legs on your hermit crab. On a female Hermit crab, there are two small holes underneath the third row of legs. These holes are called "Gonopores". On a Male hermit crab there are no holes. To check-get your hermit crab out and hold it's shell up. Make sure the shell is facing towards the ceiling and the hermit crab's body is facing torwards the floor. while the hermit crab is dangling upsidown you are able to see underneath the legs where the gonopores might be. And remember: No gonopores=MALE.....gonopores=FEMALE Hope this helps! :)
