Let's navigate through the process of connecting to a secure wireless network. It's an essential skill in the digital era, considering how much we rely on internet connectivity for numerous daily tasks. The exact steps may slightly vary depending on your device, but the general procedure is quite similar across different platforms.

Initially, you'll need to ensure that the device's wireless functionality is enabled. This is usually done through the settings menu. On many devices, there will be a visible WiFi icon in the top menu bar, which can be clicked on to quickly access WiFi settings.

Once you're in the WiFi settings menu, you'll see a list of available networks. Here, find the name (also known as the SSID) of the secured network you wish to connect to. Note that secured networks are typically marked with a lock icon. Click on this network name.

Upon clicking, you'll be prompted to enter a pass-word. This is the security key that protects the network from unauthorized access. Input the correct pass, then click on 'Connect' or 'Join', depending on your device's terminology.

After a few moments, you should be connected to the secured wireless network. If the connection is unsuccessful, double-check the entered pass-word for accuracy.

In a nutshell, connecting to a secure wireless network involves enabling your device's wireless functionality, finding the secure network in the list of available networks, and correctly inputting the network's pass-word. By following these steps, you can connect to secure wireless networks and browse the internet safely, protecting your personal data from potential digital threats. It's an easy but important step towards efficient and secure internet use.

using WEP

AnswerNo, WEP is not the answer as it can very easily be broken. Called Wired Equivalent Privacy, it was one of the first encryption protocols for wireless and was flawed from the beginning. Because of this flaw it is very easy to use commonly available cracking software to collect a large amount of packets, run the utility, and discover the pass phrase.

The way to secure you wireless network is driven by the capabilities of your wireless router but most now support the same basic options. The most important option to to enable WPA or WPA2 encryption and use AES encryption if supported on both the router and the client. This is not always supported so you can fall back to TKIP which should be supported on all. There are other options that can be enabled such as not broadcasting your SSID and limiting what MAC addresses can connect, these can be easily defeated but it is a defense in depth strategy that works best.

AnswerAs a matter of principle, all security stays on top of physical security, of which wireless connections offer none.

So, no wireless connection can be truly secure, since all the packets are readable to anyone in the physical vicinity. MITM (man in the middle) attacks of a sufficient degree of sophistication will always succeed no matter what countermeasures you use (assuming you don't have a separate secure channel of communication).

That being said, you could improve your security by encrypting all traffic being sent over the network. You should also take steps to insure that your computer hasn't been compromise, as encryption will not help in that case.

AnswerEncryption will make a big difference in securing your wireless network, but as pointed out it is not as secure as a wired network but none the less you should deploy it on your network. Apart from encryption you can also take these additional steps.....

Change the default password of your wireless router.

Change the default name of your wireless network.

Turn off SSID broadcasts.

Turn on WPA encryption.

Update your wireless router firmware.

Change the default wireless broadcast channel.

Turn off ad-hoc networking.

Enable SPI Firewall

Setup up MAC address filtering.

The first and easiest way to secure a wireless network is to use an encryption that restricts access to one's bandwidth. These are known as either WEP (wireless encryption protocol) or WPA (wireless protected access) encryptions. WPA is considered to be the more secure of the two as the keys used by each changed dynamically and periodically. Another important entity to utilize is a router's built-in firewall system. This will help protect against threats from the internet such as viruses and hackers who do not require physical access to your router to acquire information from any computer on a given network.

It is pretty simple to secure a wireless network. Open the network connection on the computer or which ever device the wireless is being used on and set a password. The more difficult the password is to figure out, the more secure the wireless network is.

How do you connect your router to an existing network if I have say an open network and I want my own private off shoot How do I make a WIFI network using an existing network wirelessly?

You have couple of choices. First is to connect your router to existing network using a cable. And then configure secured wireless network using your router settings. Second is to connect using Bridge configuration. You might run in problems with Bridge due to compatibility issues. You even will have change firmware to DD-WRT (if your router is compatible). Once you set Bridge then you go to router settings and configure secured wireless. And here you might run in problems too because you are basically extending non-secured network in a secured. A lot of routers will not allow you to do that.
