Well, if you know how to read tabs (which I'm assuming you do), what you need to know is which number is which note for tabs and then you can put the notes together in your head.
For example: If a note were on the very bottom line of a stave, it would be a G. In tabs, that would be 3 on the E string or any of the other octaves like 5 on the D string, or open G string.
What I do is I use the chord as the main bass notes since they are just the same then just elaborate the movements through scales.
