How do you convert an electric stove to run on gas?

If LP orifices were not shipped with the appliance contact your dealer to order them. The conversion set should come with instructions for changing the orifices and for switching the regulator from natural to LP. Look for a small bag or envelope affixed to the back panel of the appliance and read the manual for conversion information pertaining to your unit.

You must change the orifices for each burner. You have to use the ones that came with the stove, most times the stove comes with the ng ones installed and someone had to change them over to the lp ones. All they are is little brass bushings with a tiny hole in them that get screwed into the burner assembly.

You have an electric stove and want to convert that stoveinto a gas stove? Maybe it could be done, but at what cost to you?

Removing the electrical heating elements and installing a new gas connection pipe and gas burners would prove to be VERY expensive if not impossible to do.

In fact it is not a good idea because it would cost you much less to buy (a) a good secondhand or new gas stove and also (b) have a new gas supply pipe and new electrical wiring and outlet installed to power it.

If you really want to use a gas stove, first call a licensed electrician to remove the existing high-power electrical connection and install a new power circuit for you that has the right size circuit breaker, the right size wiring and a new outlet to provide the right voltage service for your stove.

Then call a licensed gas fitter to install the gas service and check the gas stove for safe operation.

As noted above, the whole idea is ridiculous.
You can, but you would have twice the cost of just buying a gas range to begin with.

To convert an appliance from natural gas to LP gas (propane), you probably have to replace the jet. This is a small screw in device, typically brass, with a small hole in it. LP gas requires smaller size jet (hole). The jet is the small hole the gas comes out from behind/after the control valves (Off-Low- Medium-High) just before the burner.

If you think you can handle it, you CAN make the jet smaller. Using a ball peen hammer, close (or nearly close) the opening, and then drill it back out. Brass is fairly soft, so be careful not to ruin the threads.

Again, LP gases use a larger jet than natural gas so you can't easily modify the jet to work, but you can usually buy the correct jet from the appliance manufacturer.

To convert from propane to natural gas, you can just drill the jet out larger (I do not remember the correct size drill to use).

It'd also be good to realize that if you convert, say a BBQ from propane to natural gas it won't get as hot.

Natural gas has 1,000 btu per cubic ft. and Propane has 2,500 btu per cubic ft.

Fitting the correct parts to convert a burner from running on natural gas to propane or butane is a much better idea than attempting to drill out the jet yourself, but, even though you may be able to buy the correct parts, please be aware that doing that kind of conversion yourself is totally illegal in many countries unless you are already a licensed gas technician.

The reason for the existence of such health and safety laws are very simple to understand: if the work was done by an inexperienced person there is always a risk of causing serious unwanted fires and even explosions if the work was done incorrectly or if the proper testing was not carried out before putting the appliance into service.

For your own personal safety and the safety of others who may use or be near to the appliance, always have such work done only by a licensed professional.

The first time I converted a propane appliance to natural gas, I bought the necessary hose and fittings at Lowes (they're also available at any hardware store, including Home Depot, OSH, and even Sears). I was told what size bit to use to drill out the jet, but wasn't sure so I called the Gas Company and asked. I told them I was converting a BBQ to run on Natural Gas, and had the hose and fittings. They sent someone to make sure it was done correctly.

Just like if your water heater pilot goes out, you can call your local Gas Co and they will come and light it for you and even check it for proper operation. They really don't want you to do it wrong, and are more than willing to visit and make sure it's done correctly. they'll even do adjustments and small simple repairs.

The Gas Co guy that came out told me my installation was illegal, that it is not ok to permanently hook up a portable BBQ to the gas line -- and then proceeded to drill out the jet and told me not to move it around when it's lit and to turn off the gas when I'm not using it.

Maybe the Gas Co guy was having a bad day or something - or simply lost control of his own actions - but, assuming you live in a civilized country with proper gas safety laws - you should NEVER have been allowed to keep that BBQ connected to the mains gas line!

You should be able to change the hose from the natural gas source to the propane source as long as you check to make sure its up to code per the manufacturers recomendations.
