Which just happens to be the volume in cubic metres of 1 metric tonne of ethyl alcohol at 25 deg C. It is necessary to take into account the fact that all substances liquid or solid, expand or contract depending on temperature. Provision must therefore be made for this when designing containment vessels. Pure water expands by approx 9.2% on freezing and will rupture the container if no allowance is made for this expansion.
