Splint it-a broken bone is sharp and can sever arteries and veins as well as damage tissue. Go to the hospital immediately. Keep it elevated and watch for bluish discoloration of the fingertips and/or loss of sensation. Apply ice for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Do not apply ice directly to the skin. Usually immediately after a break, the body sends endorphins which are natural pain killers that last for a short time. This is a good time to splint, as soon as possible. Once splinted, the pain is less.
