If you have multiple files on the DVD, copy it to the hard drive and fit what you can on each CD marking where you left off in the files. If it's a single file, or a DVD movie or something, it's a lot more difficult. You'll need a file splitter.

Saving a copy into your hard drive can be done in either of the two ways:

(1) by simply copying the .vob files in your DVD and saving it into your hard disk using copy and paste option or (2) by ripping the DVD using a DVD Ripper software, it is a process where the DVD files will be encoded into a single compressed file while preserving the video and audio quality.

I would recommend the 2nd option because by ripping the DVD you can save a lot of hard disk space.

If you are copying a DVD5 (single layer DVD) movie into your hard drive, by doing option 1 you will need at least 4.7GB of free hard disk space or 9GB for DVD9 (dual layer DVD) unlike ripping the DVD where you will only need more or less 700mb for DVD5 and around 2GB for DVD9.

There is really a big difference in terms of file size unless you have a very huge capacity hard disk available. Another advantage also of ripping the DVD is that you can choose what file format you like for your encoded movie file such as .avi, mp4, .wmv, .asf, .flv etc. so you can play and watch them easily using your DVD player software.

If the DVD is not write protected you will need a DVD drive that can write to the disk but there are some DVD copy software can also remove DVD protection, such as CSS, RC, RCE, etc. If your system has a DVD burner the software for copying DVD's should already be installed on the computer. Open your DVD burning software and follow the instructions for it.

DVD and CD are two different size media that look very similar. Both can store music, video and computer data. The CD will store about 700 Megabytes and the DVD about 4.4 Gigabytes. They are not interchangable because the way information is written onto them is different. If you have a CD drive it can only read CD media. If you have a DVD drive it can only read DVD media. Most current electronic devices have drives that are made to read both CD and DVD media and some can also write both types of media. If you have a computer with the correct software you can copy a CD onto the computer's hard drive and then write the content onto a DVD or visa versa. A full DVD of music will take several pieces of CD media to hold all of the music from the DVD.
