To count BC time, you start from the specified year and count backwards to 1. For example, to count 5 BC years, you start from 5 BC and count down year by year until you reach 1 BC. Note that there is no year 0, so the progression goes from 1 BC directly to 1 AD.

How homer died on 750 bc and he was born on 800 bc?

In terms of "BC" years, 750 BC is 50 years after 800 BC because BC years count down from the year before, instead of up like we currendly do in AD. For example, if this year were 2009 BC, next year would be 2008 BC.

What is BC vs AD?

BC= stands for Befor Christ(count down) AD= stands for nAnno Domini(in the year of the lord) You know when years counted down right? Well that is BC. Then AD is when the years count up. When the abbreviations are the same then subtract(-) if they are different the add(+) 500 BC And 500 AD its 1,000 years! Now do you get it? If you still dont get it.... ASK YOUR TEACHER!

Why are the years in BC reverse?

They're not reversed, exactly. The "B" in "BC" stands for "before." The longer something happens before an event, the higher the number. It's like a countdown to takeoff: T minus 5 hours, T minus 2 hours, T minus 30 minutes, etc. When you count down to a certain time, the higher numbers are the earlier ones. The BC dates count down to what we might call the year zero (but we don't, we call it the year 1). The event that everything is dated before or after in the calendar now used throughout the world is the birth of Christ. The BC dates count down to that event, measuring time before it, and the AD dates count up afterward. If you've seen one of those kitchen timers that you can set for, say, an hour, you see it count down from 60 to 0 as time runs out. Some of those timers sound their beep and then start counting up to tell you how long ago zero was. BC and AD work just like that (except that people weren't actually counting down to Christ's birth beforehand, of course--other calendars were in use then).

Which one is earlier - 30000 BC or 10000 BC?

6,000 BC is earlier. A timeline works like so: the "J" represents the birth of Christ, which is the event which separates BC and AD. From the "J" forward is where we are now. The numbers increase 0 to 2011. From the "J" backwards the number decreases 0 to (whenever the world began). Therefore 6,000 BC come before 3,000BC. BC_____________________________J___________________________________ AD

Why is it that in the year BC the count is descending and in the year AD the count is ascending?

The 'B' in 'BC' stands for 'BEFORE'. All the years 'BC' are years "Before" something. As time 'before' something goes along, you get closer and closer to the event, so the number of years 'before' it is descending. Until finally you reach the event, and you are at the year 'ZERO' before it. The 'A' in 'AD' stands for 'AFTER'. All the years 'AD' are years "After" something. If you're counting years 'after', you start at 'zero' when the event happens. Then as time 'after' it goes along, you get farther and farther from the event, so the number of years 'after' it is ascending.
