It is easy, but you need a scanner. My Epson Perfection V350 allows me to scan photographs, written documents, black and white negative slides, color negative and color positive slides. Then you just need software to edit the materials as you choose. I can scan negative slides (both b&w and color) and get a positive printable image in one step. I don't work for Epson, and there are many other options.
The first step woult be to digitize the photos.
Custom slide show
Open iPhoto. Insert the Photo Disk. iPhoto will see the disk and ask if you want to import all or selected photos. Open the Finder. Insert the Photo Disk. Open the Photo Disk and find the photos you want to import. Create a folder or folders on the laptop. Drag or copy/past the photos to the locations you wish. Eject the disk. The iPhoto app and the Preview app can show the photos. A free slide show app is called Phoenix Slides. See Links

A slide transition is the process of changing from one slide to another in a presentation. At its simplest, one slide can disappear and the next one immediately appear. You can do many kinds of transitions, like a slide moving in from one side and pushing the other slide out. You can also set the amount of time a transition takes. A custom show is a slide show that you can make from your full set of slides by picking some and displaying them. They can even be picked in a different order. Sometimes you might have variations of a slide show for different audiences. There might be some slides that you show to some that you would not show to others. Instead of creating several individual slide shows as separate files, you can create one slide show and create a few custom shows from the set of slides you have, without creating a new file.
