How do you customize guns on Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare?

It depends - if you simply want to swap a weapon (whether in singleplayer or multiplayer) just walk over to a weapon on the floor and press F (or what ever key you assigned to the USE function). If, in multiplayer, you want a better weapon, you need to complete all of the singleplayer missions, and then on the Multiplayer menu, select Create a Class, and customise your perfect loadout. For example, if you were more of a sniper than an assaulter, you would have perhaps the Draganov (or other sniper rifle) and maybe a handgun or smaller gun. Also, you can select several 'perks', things like increased accuracy, or camouflage yourself. The possibilities are literally endless.

To gain the gold guns you have to complete all the weapons challenges in that category:

Golden AK-47 - Complete all Assault Rifle Challenges

Golden Mini-Uzi - Complete all SMG Challenges

Golden M60E4 - Complete all LMG Challenges

Golden M1014 - Complete all Shotgun Challenges

Golden Dragunov - Complete all Sniper Challenges

To customize your gun on Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare, you must access the "Custom Class" panel. To change class:

1. Go to "Custom Class". (ex: Custom Class 1)
2. Choose your Primary weapon.
3. After you choose your Primary, an option will come up for camouflage.
4. Choose your Camouflage! (Different Camouflage unlocked as challenges are completed accordingly)

*You also have the choice to customize you Secondary weapon. (Pistol)

To customize Secondaries:

1. Select the Secondary weapon in "Custom Class" mode.
2. Choose between a silencer or iron sight!

*Secondaries cannot get camouflage!

you can only do it in multiplayer. you have to level up to level 4 to do custom classes. then you have to fufil the challenge requirements to get certain mods for certain weapons. most involve amount of kills you get with weapon and/or a specific mod

When creating a custom class, select your primary weapon such as the M4 Carbine. Then, after clicking the weapon of your choice the next selection will be your attachments. Click one of those, then select an available camo and you will have your gun ready for battle. *Note: Attachments must be unlocked by completing the Marksman challenges for each gun. To unlock the various camos the same must be done for the Expert challenges.

After you get through a small part of the game, you will meet a shady salesman known as "the merchant" if you walk up to him and click "tune up" it will take you too the upgrades menu. Here you can pick what gun you want to upgrade but it costs allot of money.
