Australian predecimal banknotes do not have a year of issue or printing on them.

To work out the approximate year of issue of an Australian banknote, you need to find the names of the two signatories, both of which are on the front of the banknote, the serial number and the design or motif on the banknote, then ask somebody with an Australian banknote catalogue.

You cannot usually date a Bank of England banknote without access to a banknote catalogue.

The design of the note and who or what is featured on the note needs to be identified.

You need to know the name of the Chief Cashier whose signature will appear on the front of the note. This alone will pin it down to a ten year period.

And last but not least, the serial number.

The Bankof England blue Five Pound note featuring Britannia on the front and a lion on the reverse was first issued in 1957, last issued in 1963, and ceased to be legal tender in 1967.

Try the Bank of England site below which may help you to identify your Fiver.

You cannot date most British banknotes from just the serial number.

You need a combination of the Chief Cashiers name, the serial number and the denomination, and sometimes the design of the banknote.

For example -

A Bank of England Ten Pound note, Chief Cashier Merlyn Lowther, serial number KL01 123456.

This information alone tells me that you are referring to a Bank of England E Series Ten Pound note featuring Charles Dickens on the reverse and was printed in 1999. Also, that the note is no longer legal tender having been superceded by the Charles Darwin Ten Pound note.

The Series A blue on an orange background Bank of England One Pound note was an emergency wartime issue signed by Chief Cashier K.O. Peppiatt.

They were first issued on the 29th of March, 1940, and probably last issued around the end of the war in 1945, or perhaps a little later. They ceased to be legal tender on the 28th of May, 1962.

To pin a given serial number down to a particular month and year, you would need access to a comprehensive British banknote catalogue.

What is the value of a 1955 Australian one pound note no serial number or date and has a star on the top i believe it is uncirculated.the serial number is 421834?

Your question is a little confused. Australian banknotes are not dated. They all have the signatures of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Secretary to the Treasury. Possibly Coombs and Wilson. These two names will help to pinpoint the date of the banknote. All Australian banknotes have a serial number. The serial numbers of banknotes from this period will have two alpha characters above two numeric characters (written like a fraction) followed by six numeric characters. The star at the top is part of the Australian Coat of Arms.

What is an Australian One Pound note?

The Australian One Pound note was first issued in 1913 and last issued in 1963. It was replaced by the Two Dollar note at Australia's conversion to decimal currency on the 14th of February, 1966. One Pound was equal to 20 Shillings or 240 Pence in the predecimal currency. The year of issue has never been printed on Australian banknotes. To determine the rough date of issue, you need to find the names of the two signatories on the note, and the serial number. Any valuation of an Australian banknote would depend on the condition of the note, the names of the two signatories and the serial number.
