Use a defragmentation tool. In Windows, you can do this using the Disk Defragmenter tool, which is accessible from Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter.
For Windows XP,
1. Start
2. All programs
3. Accessories
4. System tools
5. Disk Defragmenter
while you are there right-click disk defragmenter and go down to where it says "pin to start menu" and click that. This will add it to your start menu so the next time you want to defrag just click start and defrag will be in that list.

Defrag is pretty much the same in all versions of Windows.

Its also good practice to run a diskcleanup and chkdsk before the defrag and ensure you have 15% free space and ideally turn off other programs while the defrag is taking place to avoid hanging midway. Or simply install an efficient automatic defragger in real time mode and forget about defrag.
Defragment
You may not be a computer administrator, however sometimes you can still do one. Your computer may not need a defragment. Your computer does not have enough free space. Computers need about 15% of space to be free before you can defragment.
Double-click My Computer, right-click the disk to defragment, and choose Properties > Tools > Defragment Now.
The same way you defragment a normal PC hard drive. Hook it up, right click the drive in My Computer, go to tools, an among, disk clean up and error checking, there should be the option to defragment it. Once your there, just click defragment.
Defragment the hard drive.
It shouldn't be necessary to defragment more than once a month, unless you are adding a lot more files, etc. to your computer. If you notice it begin to go more slowly, that is sometimes an indication you may need to defragment more often.
Fragmentation occurs as the computer is running. Files get moved around and it takes the computer longer to perform functions the more fragmented it becomes. You should defragment your hard drives once every 2 months or so. You can defragment by going to 'Start', 'My Computer", then double click on the icon for your hard drive. Then right click once on an empty spot on the window that opened up. Now click on 'Properties', then 'Tools', then click defragment.
defrag 1. Open My Computer. 2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties. 3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now. 4. Click Defragment
Disk Defragmentation
I own a computer repair company and have always used System Mechanic.
In Windows, go to Computer or My Computer and right-click on the drive that you wish to defrag. On the context menu, select Properties. Then tab over to Tools and select defragment. If you run into trouble, then scan the drive for errors. That is found in the same place where you load Defrag. If you still have trouble, then scan and defragment in Safe Mode. Or you can install a program such as Defraggler from Piriform and use it to defrag the hard drive.
Cleaning up your computer's hard drive can make your computer work faster. Make sure to clear all cookies and defragment the hard drive. If you do this that should make your computer move a lot faster.
