∙ 8y agoResistive loads have the current in phase with the voltage and draw power with a power factor of 1. In an inductive load the current lags behind the voltage by a quarter-cycle (90 degrees) and no power is drawn so the power factor is zero.
In general a load like an induction motor has a combination of resistance and inductance to give a power factor between 0.7 and 0.9.
Portable current/power meters can be bought that can be fitted in-line with an appliance to measure the voltage, current and power. The VA figure is equal to the voltage times the current, and then the power factor is the watts divided by the VA.
