One way of determining how many syllables a word has is to clap whilst saying the word. When you clap, each clap will occur with each 'break' or 'section' of the word. For example, in the word 'responsible' you will find yourself clapping a total of 4 times (re-spon-si-ble). If you are in an environment where you can't clap, you can also do it in your head by saying the word slowly to yourself and counting how many 'sections' you make.
