Windows XP Pro enables users to roll back an installation of XP to an original installation of Win98 or ME as long as the boot partition is formatted with FAT or FAT32.

Open Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs, select Uninstall Windows XP and click Change/Remove.

I would never advise using ME, use Win98se if you have to, its more or less ME but faster but then its not very stable. Use Win2k or XP is my advice.

You'll have to run Fdisk & Reformat, & partition... after you have saved any important files. You will need "all" the Windows ME drivers for each device, if you had WinXP or 2000 they might not work. Making sure to have a Floppy BOOT disk, this is important to get the CD-ROM working for the Operating system to be reinstalled, http://www.worldstart.com/tips/shared/rr1.htm Or go to Microsoft knowledge base. For their instructions.

Why would you want to. Windows ME is the worst OS Microsoft ever came out with! If anything you need to up grade to 2000 or XP.

as of recently, it is impossible to downgrade to windows me, your only options right now are xp (support ending soon), vista (don't do it), 7, and soon to be 8. Those are the only options for windows right now.

Instead of getting to Windows ME from Windows 98 ... Why don't u go to Windows 2000 Pro with SP4 installed later on or Windows XP Pro ...

ME is just an illusion. Many things in ME does not work properly ....

Its very easy to upgrade ... Just install New Updated OS CD and boot your machine from it instead of booting from Hard drive. Then follow the instructions that's all ...

I personally recommend backing up your important DATA from your machine and then INSTEAD of just UPGRADING from Lower Windows OS to Higher Windows OS ...

REFORMAT while INSTALLING the FRESH copy of Higher Windows OS. Its always better to install a FRESH copy instead of just upgrading. Another thing with upgrading is that Windows copes older version system files onto the hard drive and then you may end up getting new problems ....

You cannot perform an upgrade install from Windows ME to Windows 2000. Windows 2000 was actually released before Windows ME, and thus will not accept it as a valid upgrade target. You must format the hard drive and install a full version of Windows 2000 if you want to replace Windows ME.

You need a full retail copy of Windows 98, not the upgrade version. You then have to do a "clean install" of Windows 98, which may require backing up your data to a separate hard drive, flash drive, CD, DVD, etc.

Upgrading an older computer that currently runs Windows 98 depends on several factors, including:

1. What the maximum amount of RAM the motherboard supports is.

2. How fast a processor you can place in it.

3. How much you are willing to spend.

4. Will the computer do what you want it to do when you are done?

1. Identify the motherboard manufacturer and model. Look up what the maximum amount of RAM it supports is. Most Pentium II and Pentium III motherboards support between 512 MB and 1 GB. You will probably want a minimum of 256 MB for XP. If the board supports less than 256, it's probably not worth the trouble.

2. Identify the maximum CPU speed. If you have a Super Socket 7 motherboard that supports a 100 MHz Front Side Bus, you can place a 600 MHz AMD K6-2 in. If it doesn't support a 100 Mhz FSB, it's not really worth the effort. You can buy decent Pentium III motherboards for under $10 on eBay.

Slot 1 motherboards support FSB speeds of 66, 100, and 133 Mhz. 66 Mhz boards support a maximum of a Celeron 766 (Mendocino core). 100 Mhz can support a maximum of a 1.1 Ghz Pentium III (Coppermine core). 133 Mhz can support up to a 1.4 Ghz Pentium III. Given the tremendous performance increase vs. comparative cost, only 100 Mhz and 133 Mhz boards are really worth dropping a newer CPU in. But 333 Mhz Celeron could still handle XP comfortably for simple tasks if you upgrade everything else. For higher level Pentium IIIs, you will need to purchase a Slotket, since there are no Slot 1 Pentium IIIs past 500 Mhz. A Slotket shouldn't cost you more than $10 in today's market.

Socket 370 boards support a FSB of 66, 100, and 133 Mhz. The only 66 Mhz processors for these boards are Pentium II-based Celerons, and there not really worth anything. Almost all 66 Mhz Socket 370s will support 100 Mhz as well, but check your documentation to be sure. A 100 Mhz FSB will support a 1.1 Ghz Pentium III, but these still go for a lot of money (about $20). A 1.4 Ghz 133 Pentium III will cost far less, and will still run in a 100 Mhz motherboard at 1.05 Ghz.

3. All of these items can still cost a decent amount of money. A new processor, lots of RAM, and a better heatsink may set you back $30. Plus, other upgrades that can improve speed, such as a new hard drive, will cost additional money.

4. You probably won't know until you do it if the system will run the way you want, but don't get your hopes up. If you demand instantaneous response time, playing the latest games, and use memory-hogging apps like Photoshop, you will probably not be happy with the results. If you just want to run a slightly more modern operating system like XP (Vista will technically run on a maxed-out Pentium III, but you will probably need massive tweaking for it to run at pseudo-acceptable levels), and run basic office apps and web browsing, then you will probably be satisfied.

How to downgrade from windows XP to windos 98 As Windows 98 supports priting from dos based programme?

It is not recommended that you downgrade. Were you to downgrade, you would just insert the 98 install disk and format over XP or maybe make a partition. But instead, you should download VirtualBox onto XP and install Windows 98 within VirtualBox as a virtual guest computer.
