That depends if you're referring to the in-game GECK device, or the GECK modding software. For the former, it is because it causes all matter to be rearranged, destroying everything, and killing you. If its the software, its most likely because you didn't install it properly.

Just for the PC ATM i really HOPE they release for the 360 There will never be a GECK (or equivalent) for the 360 because it is against Microsoft's ToS to modify the game in any way. the gecks only on broken steel
