Actually the engine comes out the top. You will find the procedure for doing this at Autozone.com in the repair guide section. Illustrated and detailed.
You can either pull the engine out, or drop the sub-frame. I understand that dropping it is easier.
You will have to drop the fuel tank and get the part (9b190) from ford. It is labeled on how to remove it. I am in the process of doing this myself.

VERY BIG JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!! Must drop engine cradle and support engine, tranmission comes out the bottom, recommend taking to pros. Can be done on with out lift but VERY HARD.

i just did a 1995 3.0 disconect battery unbolt starter and put it to the side drop the y-pipe take oil pan off replace pump

To drop Mercury from mercuric nitrate, add a reducing agent such as elemental zinc or copper. The reaction will result in Mercury being reduced from the mercuric state to metallic Mercury. This can be separated by filtration.
If it is anything like mine, I had to drop the fuel tank in order to get to my fuel filter. I'm not for sure if that is the way it was built or if someone messed that part up. Definitely check around the gas tank though.
