Once you start any application that requires the use of the camera it will automatically come on. Applications like FaceTime, Photo Booth, etc. You will know it is on by the tiny green light beside the camera.
The camera built into current Macs (including the iMac, the Macbook, the Macbook Air, and the Macbook Pro) is known as the iSight
In older MacBook Pro models, it was located within the speaker grills. In newer MacBook Pro models, there is a tiny dot to the left of the iSight camera. This is the ambient light sensor - not the camera itself as is widely mistaken.
An iSight is the physical camera on a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or iMac. Facetime is an application in OSX (Mac Computers) and iOS (iPhone, etc) that allows users to place video calls. As of recent, Apple has updated the iSight to support HD video, and it is now referred to as a "FaceTime HD Camera."
Apple's iMac, Macbook, and Macbook Pro lines of computers do have built-in iSight webcams, which have been praised for their image quality. The Mac mini, Mac Pro, and XServes do not have iSights, although it has been rumored that the Cinema Displays (which Apple recommends for these machines) will be updated to add iSights. Not all. a few years ago, Apple switched to Intel CPUs. Since then, all iMacs, Macbooks, and Macbook Pros come with built in iSight cameras.
Nope. Not without buying additional software.
Most digital camera's come with a USB cable that plugs into the Mac and the camera. Once the camera is connected it is usually (with most brands of camera) recognised by the Mac and you use either the iPhoto or Image Capture applications (or any other suitable application you may have installed) to download the images from the camera to the Mac.To use the built in iSight camera you need to run an application that can make use of the camera. These include (in the Applications folder) PhotoBooth, iChat and iMovie.
