* MIT is very interested in diversity and humanity and accepts students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Minimum requirements for admission are a small step towards acceptance but include standardized tests and leadership experience. Some majors even require a portfolio (Media arts for example)
To gain admission to MIT , In 2008 scores adveraged between 670 and 770 for Critical Reading and 730-800 for Math. One is required to submit either SAT or ACT scores but there is no minimum score for entrance.
Further, either TOEFL exams or IELTS are required (for students that speak English as a second language)
* The total expense would be around $52,000 for an academic year
Assuming one isn't inflicted with any special conditions and probably will not add any degree of fantastic diversity to the school, one basically has to try extremely hard to get in--a good rule of thumb is to become "the perfect student." Take as many highly advanced classes that you can, get amazing scores on standardized tests, receive a fantastic GPA and consequently class rank, join some programs or participate in activities that will separate one from the crowd, etc. MIT is one of the hardest schools--if not the most difficult school--to get into. I think they have an admissions rate of around 11 percent. I know several amazing kids who met many of the criteria above, yet they still didn't make it in; it's very competitive.
