  • Talk to your parents to make sure they understand global warming.
  • Ask them about your family's carbon footprint.
  • Ask them to contact the government about renewable energy.
  • Remind them about wasting gasoline and electricity.
  • Say all the same things to your teachers.

You yourself can watch the amount of electricity and oil you use:

  • when you leave a room switch off all lights.
  • when you are not watching television, switch it off.
  • if you are brushing your teeth, when you do not rinse your brush, turn the tap off.
  • try not to leave any electrical appliances running if you do not need to.
  • ride your bike or walk to school, or take a bus.
  • recycle, cut down on plastic packaging, refuse plastic bags.

You could ask the old clunker "How is the atmosphere similar to a greenhouse?" (link below) knowing full well that it's not, then laugh as folks explain why it is.

However, search on the WikiAnswers site questions in "Advanced Search" using key words like "green house gas how why what" and you'll have many questions and some good answers.

Questions like,

  • How does the carbon cycle contribute to the greenhouse effect?
  • How has the carbon cycle been disturbed during the last 200 years?
  • What are the greenhouse gases and what are they good for?
  • Explain the two main reasons why carbon dioxide has increased in the atmosphere.
  • What are the two big changes that the world needs to make to slow down global warming?
  • What are some little practical things that everyone can do to slow down global warming?
  • What are some of the things that can happen if the world warms up by 3 or 4 degrees?

Gases like the air we breathe float up into the sky all around us. Some of these gases are good at catching the heat rising from the surface of the earth. We call them greenhouse gases and the main one is the carbon gas. They stay around and keep the earth warm. This is called the greenhouse effect and it is a good thing. We have had the natural greenhouse effect since before humans started living on earth.

But now a bad thing is happening. Every time a factory uses its machines, or we drive a car or a truck, or even use electricity in our homes, people have to burn coal or oil to make it all happen. And burning coal and oil puts too much of these greenhouse gases into the air.

Another mistake was cutting down too many trees. Trees and bushes can suck in that carbon gas and store it safely inside the wood. So now there are not enough trees to suck in the carbon any more.

So because of these two things, burning oil, and cutting down trees, the natural greenhouse effect that we used to have has turned into the accelerated greenhouse effect getting faster and faster. This is why global warming is happening. It is making the earth too warm.

A: I would start by explaining that energy comes to our world from the sun as visible light and warms the surface of the world. This warmth is goes back into space, but some is stopped by greenhouse gases in the air above us, keeping the world warmer than it otherwise would be. I would then say that if people increase the amount of these greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, as we do by burning coal and oil, then more heat is trapped on the earth. This can interfere with nature and cause damaging changes to our weather.

  • We are putting too much carbon dioxide gas into the air.
  • We do this by burning coal and oil in factories and vehicles.
  • This carbon dioxide is called a greenhouse gas. It captures heat rising from the warm earth.

Why does global warming decrease temperatures?

True global warming does not decrease temperatures. So, either the model for global warming's effects is hokus-pokus, or global warming as presently claimed, does not exist. Some global warming followers will have you believe that global warming makes the weather "act crazy". If true, then it is not really global warming, is it.
