From my own experience I can say that this is usually due to the wrong approach to job search and specifically lack of NETWORKING. You can find more information on why networking is important for people in career transition on my site http://legalaliensguide.blogspot.com It is especially relevant if you are located in USA. This site is the blog for my book that is coming out soon and it will guide you to WHERE to network. Thought the book is called Legal Alien's Guide, it is not targeted to immigrant only, it is for everyone who is new to the networking scene and it gives a comprehensive list of organizations, associations, clubs, etc. that help you to find a job, start your own business, etc. If you are referring to the gap on a resume, be honest about it. Particularly if there was a downturn in the economy, there can be some rather long periods of time between jobs. Not wanting to move due to kids and family can also be a factor.
