When pages are scanned into a document imaging system what is the purpose of cataloging the image?

When documents are scanned into an imaging system they must be cataloged. This involves entering data in the computer about the document, such as the patient ID, date, provider, type of image and so on. For the most part the cataloged data is entered by hand, but in some instances the image cataloging can be automated. During scanning and cataloging, quality control is important.

How to extract an image in gimp editor?

There are many ways to do this. If the background of the image you want to extract is roughly all one color, use the Fuzzy Select tool and put the threshold at just high enough to select everything but the image you want to extract. Then delete that selection. If the background is something different, then you can erase around the image you want to extract, using a smaller and smaller brush for the more detailed parts. This is the most time-consuming and most accurate way to extract the image, I suggest this method if you're in no hurry to get it done. :)

How do you edit a scanned picture to size 4x6?

Do you mean how to resize image? First open image from File > Open in Photoshop then go to Image > Image Size. If you want to edit image you can do that regardless of source of that image. Image can be scanned, captured by digital camera, created in Photoshop or any other software available on market. If Photoshop supports that file format (JPEG, TIFF, PSD, PNG and so on) then you can edit it.

Why does a scanner change scanned text to images?

A scanner has no native ability to read text. It can only read optical data. The translation of the image into text is done by software on the computer. If the software does not exist or is unable to identify the letters for whatever reason, the document will only be viewable as an image.
