Make your hole a rectangle . Cut a piece of drwall in a slightly larger rectangle. Slid it in your hole, then hold it flat to the backside of the wall. run a couple screws into your wall to hold it. cut a piece of dryall to fit your hole which is now 1/2" deep. Tape it and float it with drywall mud.
