It is best to let butterflies go when they have bee caught. They are very delicate insects and their wings break very easily. The butterflies wings are made up of tiny scales and touching them can cause a lot of damage to the structure. This can cause the butterfly to loose its ability to fly, and can therefore ultimately cause the insect to die. It is therefore best to leave the butterfly alone in its natural environment, and release one when it has been caught.

But if you want to keep it [only for a day,tops] I would get a pickle jar,a big one, then poke holes in the lid so it is able to breathe,then put a few flowers in the bottom of the jar. Try to make the jar the image of were you found it. But, it is best to let the butterfly go once caught.

• Find a butterfly. If it lands on flat ground then lower yourself and crawl towards it. If it lands on a flower approach carefully.
• Put both your hands on either side of the butterfly, moving them diagonally towards you so the butterfly will fly to you.

• Using your forefinger and thumb, pinch gently on the butterflies body.

Tips:

• Try not to put your shadow on the butterfly.

You can use a butterfly net to catch them, otherwise you might be able to go to a garden store or nursery (they might have butterflies). If you don't mind taking care of caterpillars, you can either check the host plant for that specific larvae and raise it until it becomes a butterfly. You also can order caterpillars and eggs online and then raise them.
