The latitudinal lines run east-west across the globe, whereas the longitudinal lines run north-south across the globe. For more accurate latitudes and longitudes, you can split the intervals of ten degrees into one degree each. You can easily derive at the latitude and longitude of the place.

There are also internet sites where you can pick a point on a satellite or street map image and it will spit out a pretty accurate longitude and latitude. Just 'Google' it.

Latitude and longitude are measured in degrees. And there are a number of methods for measuring each. The preferred method chosen would depend on the quantity of work a person felt like performing, and the types of technology available to them.

Obviously, the simplest method would be to use a Global Positioning System (GPS). Just glance at the screen and all the work is done for you. But, the work that is done is actually quite complicated. The GPS unit listens for a very weak signal being transmitted by several satellites in orbit around the earth. It then compares these signals to sample signals in its memory for changes due to the Doppler Effect, determining their acceleration and deceleration. By coordinating this survey with multiple satellites, a GPS unit can precisely locate its position anywhere on earth.

For an individual without a GPS unit, finding one's latitude and longitude can become a very tricky matter. In fact, since the dawn of time, this is a question that has plagued mankind: "Where am I?" And, before very recently (historically speaking), there really was no remotely good way to answer the question.

A sextant is one of the first instruments developed that was really able to answer this question. The principle of the sextant was developed by a number of scientists and mathematicians over several centuries, though the earliest concept came from Sir Isaac newton (1643-1727). The sextant was a triangular brass instrument fitted with several lenses, mirrors, and graduations, through which a user would sight the horizon and sun (at noon) in order to determine the elevation angle of the sun. The elevation angle of the sun, of course, varies based on latitude, so this proved the best way to establish latitude until very recently.

Longitude, on the other, hand proved more elusive. Whereas only the elevation angle of the sun at noon need be known to calculate a given latitude, the precise time it reaches noon must be known precisely in order to determine longitude. This could then be compared to the known time at one's home location, and the longitudinal distance calculated. The measurement of longitude required careful measurement of time, which was completely impossible; The most accurate clocks prior to the 18th century were far to inaccurate and delicate to accomplish this task, particularly on a pitching naval vessel at sea.

A method of calculating longitude was so desperately needed that in 1714 the British Parliament established extravagant cash prizes for anyone who could devise a method to calculate longitude to within 60, 45, or 30 nautical miles, with a prize of 20,000 pounds sterling for the top prize (as much as 32 million pounds in 2010). The first recipient of the prize was John Harrison, in 1730 for his invention of the Marine Chronometer, and for his continuing development of the concept thereafter.

Finally, longitude could be determined. Harrison's' story is chronicled in Dava Sobel's 1996 book, Longitude, and in the 2000 film adaptation of the book. Today, high-grade mechanical watches certified to precise timekeeping standards are still awarded the title 'chronometer.'

Beyond these methods, it would be several hundred years before another means of location would become possible. Direction Finding (DF) could be used in reverse by triangulating one's position relative to three radio signals at a known distance, but there was no truly universally applicable location technique until the advent of GPS at the end of the 20th century.

Interestingly, GPS is still inaccurate enough today that surveyors and others in construction who require extreme precision, still use trigonometry to calculate distances to unknown positions from known positions. This method requires known starting points, clear lines of sight, and precise instruments, and isn't useful over long distances or in truly unknown areas.
