A cube is a 3 dimensional object and like a box it has 6 sides.

Let's use square sides to construct our cube. each side is 2x2 inches or 4 sq. inches per side and are themselves 2 dimensional.

We have 6 x ( 4 sq. inch sides) that make up the cube or 24 sq. inches. of surface area ( still 2 dimensional ). To derive the volume which is 3 dimensional we simply

multiply the edge of one of the 6 equal sides by itself 3 times.

Edge x edge x edge. Substituting 2 inches for one edge, we get:

2in x 2in x 2in = 8 cubic inches. The surface area is 24 sq inches.

The ratio of surface area to volume in our example is: 24 sq. inches / 8 cubic inches.
