you join tape to the wall with joint cement, then cover the joint with joint compound (mud) . once it drys, apply another coat of mud. once this drys apply a final skim coat of mud. each coast your mud should be thinner and the first coat of mud should be thick enuff not to fall of the knife or trowel. remember to also sand the ridges in between coats so as to not interfear withthe next coat that goes on after and make sure the mud ids completely dry before doing this. when covering indented surfaces ( nails or screw holes ) cover with mud and take away excess. when that is dryed, do tjhis again to rplece any shrinkage that has occured. one more coat over the screw hole should be good....then sand with 150 grit sandpaper.

If the sheetrock has not been taped and finished, do that first. Prime with a good wallboard primer, let dry, and give it a quick once over with 150 grit sandpaper to remove any dust specks or roller hairs. Wipe down with slightly damp towel or vacuum before applying the paint. If it is previously finished drywall, fill any nicks and dents with spackle, let dry, and sand smooth. Spot prime the repaired areas and lightly sand the sheetrock surfaces as above to remove any specks, etc.. Wipe down and apply paint.

Once the boards are in place you tape the joints, then mud over the tape. Most will have to be sanded at least twice. When the master taper decides it's good enough, then it's painted with wallboard primer.

Can you put sheetrock over tiles?

You cannot use sheetrock as flooring, period. If you meant on a wall, there is no reason you cannot put sheetrock over tiles. The question is why would you want to! Why not remove tiles and material behind, which is probably sheetrock, and then install new sheetrock. If it is an area prone to moisture you could use moisture resistant sheetrock. The job would look better and you would not lose the space by adding over existing material.

How much does it cost to have someone put down drywall all together?

in southern Tennessee the average cost is 6 dollars per board to hang the sheetrock(4 x 12 sheets) and 12 dollars per board to finish it. This is for the number of boards purchased, One quick note, when hanging sheetrock most people will not piece sheetrock they will only use full sheets, this seem like alot of waste but it results in a look that is smooth and neat. Good Luck
