GMOs are genetically modified organisms. In general they are made by taking DNA from a source and putting it into the cells of a target organism to produce a desired trait.

More specifically, in crops a gene from a bacteria or other organism is forced into the cells of the plant to produce a desired trait. Often the trait is either resistance to a herbicide or production of a substance in the plant itself to kill insects.

Genetic engineering has devised a technique to split the genetic characteristics in the DNA of a plant seed to implant other DNA(transgenic) to modify the genetic characteristics in a laboratory.

In order to genetically modify food you have to affect the parent of the food you want to modify. Meaning to have genetically modified beef or corn you would have to affect the cow's mother or the seeds prior to fertilization.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are usually modified by adding extra genes from another organism.

This is often done using bacteria. Bacteria contain rings of DNA called plasmids. These plasmids can be cut open using special enzymes, and a gene from another organism eg a human, can be inserted into the plasmid. The bacterium is now a GMO. When the bacteria reproduce, the plasmid is also reproduced so you can grow millions of bacteria all with the foreign (eg human) gene inside them.

This has been done using the gene for insulin from humans. Insulin is used to treat the disease Diabetes. Before GMO insulin became avaliable, insulin for human use was extracted from ther pancreas of animals eg pigs. It is not identical to human insulin and so couls cause side effects. GMO insilin is human insulin and so is mush safer, as well as being cheaper.

There are other ways of producing GMOs apart from this way.

Though the process is more complex than this, the simple answer is that a gene is taken from one species and forcibly inserted into another species in a laboratory.

What are genetically modified GM organisms and GM foods?

Genetically modified(GM)organisms are those organisms whose DNA, or genetic material has been altered through modern biotechnology whereas GM foods are those from genetically engineered crops.

What are some examples of gm food available to buy?

The availability of GM (genetically modified) food available depends on where you live. In some parts of the world, GM foods are banned for human consumption. In the US, most GM foods are considered by FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to be equivalent in nutritional value and safey to their non-GM counterparts. Most foods made in the US that contain soy, corn, or canola oil contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms), and you can't be sure unless the label says they DON'T contain these, because there is no rule to ensure GMO containing foods are labeled as such in the US (GMO labeling is voluntary in US). Some GM zucchini, apples, papayas, sugar beets, and milk are sold in supermarkets. In fact, it is hard to know which foods have GMO's and which do not, in the US.
