You must take a 4-day state "Designation" program for the Customer Service Representative License (4-40) with the Florida Department of Insurance. Then the state exam is waived. Or you can take the state exam without having taken the class. The program covers Personal Lines (automobile, homeowners, umbrellas, & no-fault) and Commercial Lines (property, liability, automobile, inland marine, crime, boiler & machinery, workers compensation, ocean marine and aviation). With this license you are permitted to conduct insurance from inside an agency and/or insurance company only and must be appointed to an general lines agent (2-20). You must hold a 4-40 license for one year before taking a mandatory 40 hour class and a state exam.
A distance learning designation for the Registered Customer Service Representative Designation is available through the University of Central Florida/Florida Insurance University. You may complete the course without physically going to the University and the successful completion excuses you from the state licensing exam for the 4-40 license. See the Related Link below.
Before considering a training organization for your license ask the following questions:
1. Is the organization based in Florida or is it from out-of-state?
2. Who does the organization train on a regular basis? The University trains every major line of insurance, including Allstate, Nationwide, State Farm, Progressive, Farmers, Travelers and Liberty Mutual Insurance Company.
3. How long has the program been available. The University program is the original Registered Customer Service Representative Program that was authorized by the state in 2003.
Prospective Customer Representatives can also now take an online course through All-Lines Training to get their 4-40 licenses in Florida. The online course is also stand-alone; once the student passes the quizzes (re-takes allowed) within the course, he will receive a license without having to take the state exam.
You can get a 440 license in North Florida by sitting for the state exam, or, more conveniently, by taking a classroom or online course that allows you to bypass the state exam. Once you read the material and pass the quizzes (re-takes allowed in the online version), you can apply for and receive your 440 Customer Insurance Representative (CIR) license from the state of Florida.

The Florida 440 License is a customer insurance representative license that allows the licensee to work for an insurance agent in the sales and service of property and casualty insurance policies. Those with a 440 license may not work outside the agency to solicit sales, but they typically handle incoming calls and make calls from the licensed insurance agent's place of business. They answer questions from customers and help establish new insurance policies as well as give advice on existing policies.
