Roman Catholic AnswerIn the Catholic Church, if it is a couple's first child, they have to attend classes (usually before the child arrives) and then they take the baby to Church shortly after birth. The priest, or deacon, welcomes them all into the Church, and claims the child for Christ. Then the child may be exorcised, than water is poured over his head as the priest pronounces the words, "I baptize you, N., in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Then the child is anointed with Sacred Chrism. In an adult, the procedure is similar although the questions and answers made before the actual baptism are answered by the candidate, himself, in the case of the infant, it is the parents and Godparents who make the answers. In an emergency - immanent death of an unbaptized person, anyone may baptize, using water and the words above.

In order to be baptized, first a person must repent (ask God for forgiveness) for all of the sins that they have committed in their life (Acts 3:19). Next, a pastor must then baptize them in a tub of water. This is because their body must be fully submersed in water (like a quick dunk) for God to wash their sins away (Acts 2:38). So they go down into the water a sinner, but when they come out, they're a new person because all that sin was left in the water (Ephesians 4:24). Now that they are completely sin free, the next task is trying to stay that way and receive the Holy Ghost. To find out more about the Holy Ghost or anything else, just message me. =]

Catholic AnswerBaptism is the first thing that a person does when entering the Church. If he is converting as an adult, then he must enter the RCIA program, usually in late summer. The program runs until the Easter Vigil in the spring, at which point the catechumen receives baptism, usually by pouring water over their forehead and anointing with Sacred Chrism. For anyone interested in baptism, please contact your local Catholic Church to tell them of your interest.
