Additional informationBarring a pancreas transplant, type I Diabetes is incurable. Many patients, however, shortly after diagnosis have what is called a "honeymoon period," where there insulin requirements may drop down and they may be free of the need for insulin for a period of time. Unfortunately, this is only temporary, and the pancreas will fail, leaving the patient with the lifelong need for exogenous insulin injections.

Today, there is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes. However, diabetes can be effectively managed with insulin shots, and there are some insulin pumps being tested.

In order to get type 1 diabetes, you must have a genetic factor and an environmental factor. Unless you end up getting diabetes, you probably will never know if you have a genetic factor for it. An environmental factor that leads to type 1 diabetes is often a common virus such as the flu. A strong immune system may go into overdrive fighting such a virus off, which can kill beta cells in the pancreas, resulting in type 1 diabetes. That's why strong, young people are usually the ones who get it.

More simply put, drink soft drinks like coke, drink Milk (huge correlation between type I and II diabetes and milk consumption, Harvard study), and eat processed foods high in sugar.

You cannot 'catch' type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when you have too much weight (are overweight or obese), and don't exercise. Those two factors put you at risk for getting type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is genetic. Therefor if a family member has it, your more likely to get it. But it doesn't mean you definitely will get it. Usually it skips a generation, so your grandparents might have it. But that doesn't mean your risk goes down, you still could get it if someone in your family has it.

It is not currently known what causes Type I diabetes. Here is a theory:

- It could be caused from an autoimmune disorder whereby the T-cells of our body recognise the insulin producing pancreatic beta cells as foreign. In some type I diabetes patients you can see the beta cells of the pancreas being destroyed.

According to Dr. John McDougall, type-1 diabetes (also called childhood, juvenile, or insulin-dependent diabetes) is caused by the permanent destruction of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, which in many cases is from an autoimmune reaction involving cow's milk. Type-2 (also called adult-onset) diabetes is caused by over-nutrition from a diet rich in meat, dairy products, sugars, fats, and calories.
