Add up all the forces acting on the object, and be careful to take the direction of

each force into consideration.

When you do that, you'll notice that 5 pounds of force pushing the object north, and

5 pounds of force pushing the object south, cancel each other and add up to zero,

just as if neither of those two forces was there at all.

When you finish adding up all the forces on the object in that way, whatever force

you finish with is the net force on the object.
