once you switch to drive you can uninstall it off your computer the documents are still there under drive and it becomes like that but you can still use documents the same way under the name drive

You can't save to a computer without a HDD but you can save it to some from of portable storage like a USB, Flash, SD, DVD or a Blu-Ray disk. if you don't have any of them then you can store it on the cloud with soft where like google docs but then that brings back to step 1 as you need to save the file before uploading it to Google Docs unless you create it using Google docs

No; your recent docs is only a list of shortcuts. If it was stored exclusively on the USB, that is the only place you can get it from.
You can back up the data into a desktop. With the growth of cloud services, you can backup images, music, and files in Google+, Google Play Music, and Google Drive respectively. There are also third party storage apps out there that you can choose from.
Default restoring is also an option on Chrome. It can reset all the changes that had been made back to normal.
