Turn a hairdryer on the cool setting. Point the hairdryer down at the cast so that the cool air flows into the cast. If you keep the hairdryer trained on the cast for some time it may relieve the itching.

or

Have Benadryl handy in case of itching under your cast. Taking this over the counter medication may help relieve the itching.

You can itch an itch in a cast with a coat hanger or other similar thin long item you can slide down the inside of the cast. However, extreme caution should be used. Make sure that the item that you are going to use will not scratch or cut the skin. Scratches or cuts to the skin covered by a cast could result in an infection. The inside of a cast is dark, damp and warm....all great ways increase the possibility of an infection. The inability to wash or treat a cut could also increase the danger of infection.

Put adhesive bandage tape on the end of the hanger, and ask your Doc if you can take some generic Benadryl [Dipenhydramine HCL ].

Moisture can build up inside the cast, as well as heat, which can result in itching due to heat rash. Also, it doesn't always itch more than other areas of your body, it just seems that way because it's almost impossible to scratch it. When I was a child I broke my arm and had to wear a cast for 6 weeks. It was hot - mid August, with the temps in the high 90's, and we did not have air conditioning then. What I would do to scratch it was to get broom straws and run them down the cast to scratch it. It actually helped a lot.

Many people use something long and blunt - like a knitting needle - to reach the bit that itches... which always seems to be somewhere out of normal reach !
