Take a white cotton terrycloth hand-towel thoroughly moistened with cool water and lay on your back with it applied to your face for 15-30 minutes, re-wet it if it dries. The dead flesh cells will absorb the water enough that you can gently agitate a soft, wet sponge without causing too much irritation to the tender fresh flesh beneath. This may take a few attempts depending upon how many skin cell layers were damaged.
Moisturizers should be tested in small areas, as many can really sting when you have a sunburn. Aloe Vera is a very good product for aiding the healing process of sun-burnt flesh, although it can feel tacky/sticky as it is absorbed.
The above concerns a normal sunburn, which is a first degree burn which only damaged the initial skin layers. If there is severe blistering, cracking of skin, weeping fluids that crystallize on the flesh and associated severe pain, it is a second degree burn, AKA "sun poisoning" and should be treated by a physician.
