to check for a spark, remove the spark plug wires, and either use a spare plug or the one in the cylinder. Hold the plug againt some exposed metal on the bike and turn the engine over, you should see a spark. You might want to put the sparkplug somewhere where you dont have to hold onto it while it is sparking, it can shock you, not to bad though.
